Russo Double Secures Arsenal Victory Over Liverpool at Anfield
Alessia Russo's brace helped Arsenal secure a crucial win over Liverpool in a closely contested match at Anfield.
Alessia Russo's double strike proved decisive as Arsenal claimed a hard-fought victory over Liverpool at Anfield, marking a significant turnaround for the Gunners who had struggled in recent matches. The triumph came despite Liverpool's spirited challenge, which included an equalizer shortly after Arsenal's initial goal and a near-miss in the latter stages of the game.
Arsenal's win was particularly notable given their recent form, having only secured one victory in their previous seven Women's Super League encounters. This latest success sets up an intriguing clash with European champions Barcelona in their upcoming fixture.
The match began promisingly for Arsenal, with Russo finding the back of the net early on. However, Liverpool swiftly responded, leveling the score just six minutes later. The deadlock remained until the final moments of the first half, when Russo struck again, giving her side a slender lead heading into halftime.
Liverpool pushed for an equalizer throughout the second period, even managing to have a goal ruled out by an offside decision. They nearly found the leveller in the 89th minute but were unable to convert their chance, leaving the final score at 2-1 in favor of Arsenal.
Renée Slegers, Arsenal’s head coach, will be pleased with her team's performance, especially considering the tough competition they faced. Meanwhile, Liverpool's disappointment was compounded by the disallowed goal, adding to the drama of the encounter.
In other Women's Super League action on Sunday, November 8, 2026, Manchester United edged out Aston Villa 1-0 thanks to Julia Zigiotti Olme's goal. Tottenham Hotspur also emerged victorious, defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 with contributions from Signe Gaupset and Olivia Holdt. London City Lionesses continued their impressive run with a 4-1 win over Birmingham City, while Crystal Palace secured a narrow 3-2 victory against Charlton Athletic, with Bethany England scoring the winner.
