Netflix's 'Bass x Machina': A Steampunk Adventure Inspired by Real-Life U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves

In a delightful twist on traditional Western lore, Netflix has unveiled 'Bass x Machina', an animated series that pays homage to the legendary U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves while weaving in steampunk and fantasy elements. This unique blend of history and imagination offers viewers a captivating journey into a world where the American Old West meets advanced technology.

'Bass x Machina' introduces audiences to a version of Bass Reeves who possesses a robotic arm, a result of a harrowing experiment conducted during the Civil War era. This mechanical addition not only sets the stage for thrilling action sequences but also serves as a poignant symbol of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity. The series, which is now streaming on Netflix, comprises six episodes that transport viewers to a richly detailed universe filled with both familiar and fantastical elements.

Brian Tyree Henry lends his voice to the role of Bass Reeves, bringing depth and charisma to the character. His portrayal captures the essence of a bounty hunter and part-machine, seamlessly blending the grit of the Old West with the wonder of steampunk innovation. Alongside Henry, Tati Gabrielle voices Dana Starr, a niece of the missing scientist Dr. Eugene Starr, adding another layer of intrigue to the narrative.

Janelle Monáe contributes to the series not only through her enchanting theme song but also by voicing Glory, Bass Reeves' wife. Her involvement adds a touch of star power and musical flair to the already vibrant cast. The series delves into themes of racial inequality and Black history, offering a nuanced exploration of these subjects within the context of its fantastical setting.

Set in a Native American territory known as the Badlands, 'Bass x Machina' unfolds against a backdrop of rich cultural heritage and scientific mystery. The disappearance of Dr. Eugene Starr serves as a catalyst for the story, drawing viewers into a tale of adventure, discovery, and the enduring spirit of Bass Reeves.
